The basic function of this department is the janitors of the city. Our job is to keep the city clean and maintain the streets and sidewalks in good condition. We are also responsible for the drainage system of the city. This drainage maintetance is a constant upkeep for us. All of the drainage ditches and tiles have to be checked periodically for problems. If you have a problem in your area, then you need to let us know. We can't always be there when a problem occurs. Another large task for us is to keep the city right of ways mowed during the summer months. This accounts for 70% of our manpower and 5 machines going full time to keep up with the grass. In the fall of the year we begin our leaf collection. This collection process will continue until Christmas, at which time we service and clean the leaf equipment and put it back in storage. Anyitme after that we will only pick up bagged leafs. We do not have a street by street schedule because the leafs are not all in the same area at the same time. Therefore we go by call ins and our Sanitation truck driver makes a list while on his daily route. The leafs we collect are also available as mulch or compost free of charge.
